Current Directory:
A directory is the same as a folder, which is an area where you store
your files and other folders. The / tells you that you are at the root
folder which is the first folder of your website.
Back to Root:
Takes you back to the root folder
Refresh:
Displays the contents of your folder again.
Type: Shows you whether it is a file or folder.
Is a folder. You can click on it and it will show the
folders contents.
..
Takes you to the parent folder. A parent folder is the
folder above the current one.
Is a webpage. If you click on it, it will display that
page for you.
Is an image. If you click on it, it will display that
image for you.
Is an unknown file type. If you click on it, it may
or may not display properly in your browser.
Name: Shows the name of the file or folder. File names are usually separated
by a period. The letters after the period are an indication of what kind
of file it is. These are called a file extension and are used by the computer
to indicate which program to use to open the file.
Eg. .html is a webpage, .doc is a document, .mp3 is an MP3 music file.
Size:
Shows how large the file is in bytes. Each file or folder has a certain
size depending on how much data is stored in the file. Files that hold
pictures are usually larger than web page files. Files that hold sound
and video are a lot larger than any other files.
Modified:
Tells you when the last time you modified that file. A modification of
a file happens when you copy it, upload it or update your homepage.
Action:
Are the ways you can modify that file or folder. Delete: Will permanently delete the file. It will prompt you to
press OK before it deletes the file in case you accidently press the button. Rename: You can rename files and folders to other names. If you
are renaming a file, be sure that you keep the same extension (letters
after the period). If you don't, the file may become unusable and won't
display on your website properly.
Total Account Size:
Shows the total size of all the files and folders in your website, including
those in sub-folders.
Bytes Remaining:
Shows how many bytes of storage that you have left on your website. You
hava a total or 5,000,000 bytes or 5 Mb. Once you reach this limit, you
will be unable to upload any files until you make space by deleting unused
files.
Statistics Folder: Every myknet.org account has a statistics folder. The statistics folder
holds information about your website such as how many hits, visits, you
have had in the past day, month, and year. Click on the index.html in
this folder to visit the page.
Creating a New Directory
You can create new directories in your website to organize your pages,
pictures, and files better. To create a new directory in the current directory,
type in the name of the directory in the following text field. When making
a directory name, try not to use spaces as they tend to cause problems
when navigating your website. Instead of a space, use an underscore _
or a hyphen - .
Create a new directory:
Then click on the
button.
Now the directory should be listed along with the other ones in your
current directory.
Uploading a File
You can upload any type of file that you want to your website, as long
as the file size is less than what you have remaining on your account.
To upload a file from your computer to your website, click on the
button.
It should open a new window in your browser that looks like the following.
Navigate to the file that you want to upload. Select the file and then
click on Open
Now click on the
button.
!Tip: If you are uploading your homepage and have pictures included
in it, make sure that you upload these images to the correct folder that
is specified in your webpage code.
